When individuals are older you may be considering a greater degree of independence which may involve using public transport to get to and from work or social occasions.
Many things must be taken into consideration when using public transport from selecting the correct bus or train to board to paying for your ticket.
Each of these steps will require a variety of skills, for example when paying for a ticket:
- it is necessary to communicate with a person in a ticket office or the bus driver/ train conductor and
- practice money management skills (in some cases it may be possible to purchase a ticket on line).
It is therefore important when teaching to break each task down into manageable chunks and gradually practice the individual skills in sequence.
