The Journey

Prior to the individual with autism completing a journey using public transport independently, it is important to have some practice journeys to help them generalise the skills which they have learned.

Practice versions of the journey, will help to alleviate anxieties such as the sights, sounds and smells which will be experienced and issues such as where to sit.

It is important also that they can independently recognise where they need to get off the bus/ train. Whether this is by recognising a significant landmark, by counting the stops or listening to the announcement which may be made on board.
